Slot machines may appear to be a game of luck more than anything else, as the player merely has to spin the reels in order to play. There are no in-game decisions that improve or decrease the players odds of winning. However, there are several strategies that can help give you a better chance of winning (or making your money last longer) just like any other casino game. Some of the top slots strategies are:
Sticking to One Machine
This is an extremely basic and simple strategy for the slot games, but it can be quite effective. It largely revolves around the principle of probability eventually turning in favor of the player. Once you have decided which machine you want to play, take it as far as your gaming budget allows. It usually takes some time before hitting enough of the higher combinations or bonus rounds that are required to make a session profitable.
Opting for Games That Have Small Jackpots
This is a really big one for me. Large jackpots may seem like a good idea. However, these jackpots can be the Achilles heel for a slot player as they often have a lower probability of success. The likelihood of success is inversely proportional to the size of the jackpot. Hence, games that have smaller jackpots tend to provide more frequent winning combinations and give you a better chance of achieving the expected payout percentage in the long run. That is why I like games like Double Diamond where the top prize tends to be about 800x the bet.
Identifying the Best Bonus Rounds
Bonus features are the most sought-after feature in any slot game (especially video slots) and every developer focuses on this aspect. If I am playing a game and don’t get at least one bonus round or special multiplier, I feel a little slighted even though that is a perfectly normal outcome. These bonus rounds give players the opportunity to win large amounts on single spins. The primary target for the player needs to be the bonus features. These additional rounds within a game often use elements like free spins, multipliers, and options to retrigger these rounds.
I tend to go for games with a few small multipliers and wilds as well as re-spins. I avoid big multipliers and stacked symbols. Those stacked symbols mean more winning lines when they do hit, but more often, they block what would have been winning lines with other symbols. I just find the win frequency too low.
Picking the Ideal Denomination
The coin denomination can be a big factor in increasing the likelihood of success in a slot game. You need to figure out what denomination allows you to get the best payout percentage from the game while still staying within your budget. Some games allow you to get to the bonus rounds with the minimum bet, but many require the max-bet to enable all of the rounds, multipliers or special symbols. If you are playing the max-bet (and you should be doing that on most machines) each spin will usually cost more on a penny machine, which can have a max-bet as high as 400 credits, than most quarter machines, which frequently have a max-bet of only 3 or 5 credits.
Avoiding Games with Progressive Jackpots
Progressive jackpots sound like an excellent way to ramp up the chances of becoming a millionaire, as most of these jackpots hold the way to millions. However, they also have a very low probability of success. There is nothing wrong with chasing your dream, but you should be mindful of the extremely low probability. Games with progressive jackpots often tend to have lower return percentage in general and it is best to avoid such titles. Remember, if the machine says it has a 98% payout (which is very high), much of that is taken up by the progressive jackpot.
