Foursquare Changes

I really liked Foursquare. It was a nice way to have some friendly competition, but I really used it to get discounts and special access. That is changing. Foursquare has been redesigned and there is a new app called Swarm (by Foursquare) which is used to check in. If there is a Special or if you want to see tips other users have left, it directs you to open the old Foursquare app after checking in on Swarm.
As part of the redesign, they discontinued badges. That is a major disappointment. Badges required multiple check ins, but rewarded you with nice perks. The Cosmopolitan’s “VIP” badge served as a line pass at the Wicked Spoon buffetMandalay Bay’s “Resortist” badge gave you a free fur upgrade at the Minus5 bar at Mandalay Place.  The Luxor’s “Get Your Lux On” badge gave  you a free pass to LAX nightclub. Any badges you have earned still show up in your online account, but they do not appear in the app so you can’t use them.

You can still get special discounts just for checking in at some locations. Continue reading Foursquare Changes

Foursquare Check In Specials: Part 1 – Hotels

I like Foursquare. Aside from the friendly competition to see who checks in to the most places, I like it because many businesses offer special perks just for checking in via Foursquare. Some of the offers are triggered when you check in. Others require multiple check ins. You can find some of these in my Social Savings post and my Caesars Joins Foursquare post. The Foursquare app is available for Android and iOS. You can also link it with Facebook and Twitter if you are so inclined.

Here is a current list of Foursquare specials available by checking in to a Las Vegas hotel/casino on Foursquare.  All specials are unlocked with each check in unless specified. To redeem them, just show your server or cashier your phone’s screen with the unlocked Foursquare special.

Social Savings in Las Vegas

Almost every casino has Facebook, TwitterFoursquare and SMS-text based platforms to let you know what they have to offer and to send you special discounts and promotions.

MGM Resorts has also created iPhone and Android apps with casino details and special offers. They are basically miniature versions of the casino’s full website (including property maps so you can find your way around!). The apps even let you make room and dining reservations. MGM Resorts has made a separate app for each of their casinos. If you are only interested in their shopping or entertainment options, they have the Shop MGM Resorts and the Entertainment of Las Vegas apps just for that.
