Atomic Testing Museum

While there are many reasons to visit Las Vegas these days, there was an era when Atomic Tourism was a big draw. There would be watch parties from Fremont Street (this was long before the FSE canopy went up) to view the tests and mushroom clouds. There was even a Miss Atomic Bomb.

The Museum:

The Atomic Testing Museum lets you experience the nostalgia as well as the reality of that era.  They have displays following a detailed timeline of nuclear testing progress and treaties as well as toys and atomic themed marketing.  While much of the museum and many of the exhibits focus on the Nevada Test Site and the Las Vegas area, there is also coverage of underwater testing in the Pacific. They even have a special section at the end of the tour, detailing the impact of testing on the tribes and tribal lands.

You can experience a simulated atomic bomb test is their Ground Zero Theater. It is a full sensory experience where you can feel the earth shake just like it would have if you were in a bunker during a test.

Getting there:

The Atomic Testing Museum is located a mile and a half from the Strip at 755 E. Flamingo Rd. If you are using Lyft or Uber, I highly recommend typing in the actual address. Lyft had an incomplete address for the museum and ended up taking us miles past it before we realized the problem.

The Atomic Testing Museum is associated with The Smithsonian Institution, but there is an admission fee. General Admission is $22 for adults. Student, senior, military and Nevada resident discounts are available. Children 6 and under  are free. You may be able to get a discount if you buy your tickets at the ticket counter and let them know you took public transportation (bus, cab, Lyft).

Mac King at Harrahs

Mac King’s Comedy Magic show makes me really happy. It is a family friendly (very kid oriented, really) magic and comedy show that still has a lot to offer adults.

At its core, the show is a magic show with rope tricks, card tricks, sleight of hand, fire, some magical appearances and disappearances and his signature goldfish tricks. The show is really well written and has some finely crafted humor woven into it. (something you can hone during a show that has been running for almost 20 years). There is also a lot of room for improv during the audience participation segment. (a few for kids and a few for adults).

Don’t let the afternoon time slot (1p and 3p) fool you. This is a high quality show. The afternoon time slot is a reflection of the kid/family friendly focus, not the show quality. It isn’t as flashy and boisterous as Penn & Teller, but it shares a lot of the sensibilities for a much more reasonable price.

LINQ & Flamingo Bunk Bed Room Occupancy

You may have seen that The LINQ and Flamingo now have rooms with bunk beds. They advertise them as “perfect for a family, a large group of friends, or hosting a fun get-together “.

Flamingo Bunk Bed Room with 2 Queen Beds and 2 Full bunk beds

You need to check the fine print before you start making calls and planning that party weekend in Vegas, though. Those rooms are still listed with a maximum occupancy of 4 people. That includes kids. They also have an extra $30 per-person charge for more than 2 people. Those limitations and fees are normal for a regular room, but seem counter to the point of having a bunk bed room. Here are screen grabs for the same room on the same dates. One with only 2 people listed and one with 4.

Bellagio Fountain Show Songs and Schedule 2024

I want to give a special shout out to the readers who have shared the schedules with me over the years when I have not been able to get them myself (especially this year). You know who you are. I appreciate you.

Here is a scan of the  current Bellagio Fountain Show song list and schedule as of March 27, 2024.
The regular performance schedule is:

  • Monday-Friday – every half hour from 3pm until 7pm; every 15 minutes from 7pm until 11:55pm
  • Saturday, Sunday  & Holidays  – every 30 minutes from 12pm until 7pm, every 15 minutes from 7pm until 11:55pm

Schedule changes are rare, but can occur due to weather,  certain wedding packages and special events. I was also informed this morning that if there is high wind they may change the scheduled song to one that isn’t as effected by the wind instead of cancelling the show.
